Kale Smythe – all about the superfood and Paper Boat Armada

Kale sits quietly in Strat Comm class, always.  A chance interview exercise reveals a lot more layers. He smiles but stays quiet, so I’ve asked him what he’s found funny, “Watch keyboard cat, it will change your life” he smirks.

“Watch keyboard cat, it will change your life”

Onto serious business, he’s all about playing base guitar with his alternative rock band Paper Boat Armada (PBA) – conceived at year 12 History class. There are 5 members – 2 guitarists Jayden and Howard, vocalist James, drummer Marshall and base guitarist Kale. They’re all inspired by different music genres to write and compose their own original songs, Kale liking British rock bands like “The Cure” and “Artic Monkeys”.

It didn’t start of that way, with PBA’s first landmark gig at “Battle of the Bands” in August 2012 in front of a 200 plus crowd. Kale recalls “we sang three songs, which we’ve scrapped now.  We’ve got better since then.”  Two years on PBA still has weekly rehearsals and weekly gigs around Bendigo, “Paid if we’re lucky,” Kale pipes.

What is the ultimate for PBA? “Glastonbury Festival would be the top.” Kale says.  On an Australia platform, Kale shares PBA’s aspirations of an album, with 10 original songs already in the repertoire.  Only 15 minutes after we’ve conversed I know more about Kale than person than his name resembling a superfood.

I’ll be following Paper Boat Armada’s musical journey, so get ready to press the “like” button on PBA’s page any time soon.
